Dan Carlin is awesome. I'd been listening to his podcast for a while before getting into this book and just like the former, the latter does not disappoint. History is looking at thematically, rather than periodically-based and the themes are often off-beat. Carlin is not a classically trained historian and in a way, that shows. In a good way.
