Review 51: Peak: Secrets from the New Science of Expertise

Peak: Secrets from the New Science of Expertise Peak: Secrets from the New Science of Expertise by K. Anders Ericsson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I've read many a book on what makes great people great. Many come to the same conclusions, as does this book. The main message here is that there is no natural talent, only hard work. Grit, a similar book, came to the same conclusion. Further points include; there are no shortcuts, and automation leads to degradation. This means that, in a sense, one has to put those 10.000 hours in. The second point tries to say that just training or practising is not enough. Mindless repetition only gets you so far. You absolutely need to get out of your comfort zone, you have to keep pushing. The alternative is that you stagnate and quite possibly get worse in whatever you're trying to improve.

Additional points cover how to maintain motivation, the importance of coaching and proper feedback and the uselessness of multi-tasking. Either you practice one thing, consciously, or you don't practice at all.

Four stars.
