Review 21: Babylon's Ashes

Babylon's Ashes Babylon's Ashes by James S.A. Corey
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

And so we come to the end of chapter 6 of this series I have been mostly catching up to this year. We know now that book 7 will start with a 30-year jump, so in a way, this is the end of the characters as we have come to know them. What's the balance?

This book is a direct sequel to its predecessor Nemesis Games. This is unlike the small time jumps between other books. The story closes off well and my major complaint on the previous books (too small of a scale), has been solved with this and the previous book. The writing is the same as before. Fast, sometimes funny, sometimes repetitive (yes, we know Fred looks tired. This was clear from the previous sixteen times you told us). However, the characters are mostly believable, though a bit flat every now and then. Marco is not an entirely believable antagonist and Filip is just... off. Of the characters who barely had any pages before, I personally liked Amos and Alex best, with Naomi being less interesting.
In general, it's a good ending to this part of the story and could even feel like an end to the entire story. There is a fragile peace and things can go a million different ways from here. Which is why I am all the more curious about number 7.
